8 Celebrity Makeup Artists to Follow on Instagram

By: Iman Taouil

In the era of social media, everything is more accessible, and the fashion and beauty industries are a prime example of that rule. Inspiration, countless trends and long-kept beauty secrets and skills are now just a click, or swipe of the finger away. From street style pictures, celebrities' ootd posts and it girls' selfies, Instagram is at the heart of this phenomenon. The major difference it makes is the possibility to see behind the scenes of the no longer unattainable fashion and beauty industries, which often go hand in hand.

If you spot a look you like in a magazine, on the red carpet or the runway, there's a high chance you can find the stylists and makeup artists who crafted the look on Instagram. Celebrity makeup artists have become celebrities of their own, and their online following proves it. Here's a non-exhaustive guide to famous beauty gurus to follow on Instagram if you want to learn a makeup tip or two.

Hung Vanngo - @hungvanngo

Hung Vanngo is the makeup artist behind Selena Gomez's popular smokey-eye look, but his achievements don't stop there. His work has appeared in too many fashion advertisements and magazine pages to list them all, and he's now an ambassador for Marc Jacobs Beauty. As most up-and-coming celebrity make-up artists, his Instagram page makes for an interesting resume. His signature look is easily recognizable and generally consists of smokey eyes, full lips and matte, blushed cheeks.

Ania Milczarczyk@aniamilczarczyk

If you're a beauty enthusiast, it's likely you've seen one of Ania Milczarczyk's viral looks before. Milczarczyk is an Australian celebrity makeup artist, known for being the "queen of strobing." Her signature look is a natural, dewy, luminous face with neutral eyes and bushy brows, which reflects her motto: "less is more." She shares tips on a regular basis, making her Instagram page an interesting space to watch.

Patrick Ta - @patrickta

Patrick Ta is an Instagram-made American makeup artist with an impressive resume. From fashion editorials to red carpets, his client list includes Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls and many other influential women in fashion. His technique is more about a full Hollywood glam rather than a natural look, but because his work is so diverse, his Instagram page is a goldmine of inspiration.

Peter Philips@peterphilipsmakeup

As the creative and image director of Dior makeup, Peter Philips certainly knows a lot about the place of makeup in fashion. The looks he creates are made for the runway and editorials, making his Instagram page the perfect place to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the fashion world. As a bonus, he often posts short tutorial videos on how to recreate his latest runway looks.

Pat McGrath@patmcgrathreal

If the beauty industry was a realm, Pat McGrath would be its queen. Crowned most influential makeup artists in the world by Vogue, her work, which she describes as unpredictable, is where the beauty and fashion worlds overlap. Her creativity knows no boundaries, and her favorite technique is using her fingers, rather than brushes. With more than 20 years of career, Pat McGrath hasn't exhausted her resources; she has her own makeup line, and her looks continue to dominate the runways of fashion week. For the cherry on top, Pat McGrath doesn't just post her own work on Instagram, she also shares her own sources of inspiration.

Sir John - @sirjohnofficial

If Beyoncé wakes up like this, it might be thanks to a night fairy named Sir John. As Pat McGrath's former assistant behind the scenes of fashion shows and L'Oreal Paris' brand ambassador, Sir John knows how to incorporate that artistic touch of couture into the looks he crafts for celebrity clients ranging from Beyoncé to Naomi Campbell. What makes him stand out? Besides the fact that he started with high fashion before Hollywood, Sir John has worked with women from Harlem to Hong Kong, and has "learnt their cultural nuances and how to adapt makeup to different skin tones."

Morgane Martini @morgane_martini

Frenchie Morgane Martini is yet another makeup artists who started off in Pat McGrath's team. Martini mostly works on editorials and fashion advertising, and one of her most notable recent works was Bella Hadid's colorful makeup on the cover of Vogue Brazil. While bold colors and artistic shapes seem to be her brand, Martini is no stranger to good old Hollywood glam, as she also dabbles in red carpet looks. Her Instagram page stands out through a series of raw Polaroid shots she takes after working her magic on clients, which somehow feel more authentic than a selfie.

Adam Burrell - @adamburrell

Adam Burrell is the official makeup artists of British girl group Little Mix, but has a handful of other famous clients and an impressive portfolio covering both the fashion and beauty fields. The most notable thing about the looks he creates is their versatility and originality. Ranging from casual to bold and colorful, while still being all wearable, they're everything but boring, which makes his page yet another Instagram goldmine.

Mario Dedivanovic @makeupbymario

You can't talk about social media beauty influencers without mentioning Mario Dedivanovic - the makeup artists who brought back the contour trend with Kim Kardashian's now go-to look. That infamous look made Dedivanovic one of the most followed celebrity makeup artists and led to him giving master classes where he teaches his best techniques. Dedivanovic's signature look is a flawless, chiseled face with monochromatic nude vibes.
