3 Winter Trends Courtesy of NYC Art Students

For me, attending an art school in a big city has been a culture shock, especially coming from the south. As a transfer student at The New School in New York City, I immediately noticed that appearance is prioritized here, and students are very fashion forward. After being here for about two months, I’ve noticed some interesting winter trends among the student body that make for the perfect style inspiration for chilly days.

1. Puffer Coats
Whether it’s long or cropped, Puffer coats are quite popular in the city. Not only do they come in a variety of colors, but they’re also perfect to wear New York City’s freezing weather. This coat is definitely on my must-buy list for next winter.

2. Doc Martens
Doc Martens are arguably the most popular shoes in New York City.  These boots are the go-to combat boots, and just about everyone owns a pair of black Docs. Doc Martens are perfect for every season and they can compliment any outfit. After being in the city for a couple of months, I also fell into the trap of buying a pair of white Jadon Doc Martens. It was quite the investment, but I don’t regret my purchase at all.

3. Loose Pants
Another trend I’ve noticed is that skinny jeans are steadily being replaced for a more comfy option. Mom jeans, culottes- you name it. Loose pants are in style and I honestly see them as here to stay. Not only are these pants fashionable, but they’re also extremely comfortable, which is ideal for busy college students.
